BACKGROUND Stefano Fedele completed his degree (DMD, 1993-1998), post-graduate integrated academic/clinical training in Oral Medicine and PhD (1999-2005) at the University Federico II of Naples, Italy. He moved to University College London/University College London Hospital, Eastman Institute & Hospital in 2006 as Clinical Lecturer, and then promoted to Senior Clinical Lecturer (2009), Honorary Consultant (2012), and Full Professor of Oral Medicine (2017). He’s currently Head of Department of Clinical Research and Programme Director of the MSc in Oral Medicine. He is Lead for the Oral Health & Disease Theme, NIHR UCLH Biomedical Research Centre. He sits on the following National Advisory Groups of the National Cancer Network: - Head & Neck Cancer Clinical Specialty Group - Screening, Prevention & Early Diagnosis Advisory Group (SPED). CLINICAL EXPERTISE Acute and chronic inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa (lichen planus, pemphigus and pemphigoid, erythema multiforme, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, oral mucositis) Oro-facial granulomatosis (OFG) Oral Cancer and Precancer Jaw bone disease Hyposalivation (dry mouth, xerostomia) and non-neoplastic diseases of the salivary glands Orofacial pain RESEARCH INTERESTS Professor Fedele’s research activity is predominantly focused on clinical and translational research in Oral Medicine. He has published over 100 scientific papers and has been awarded (as Principal Investigator or contributed to as Co-Investigator) research grants from several EU and UK funding bodies including FP6, FP7, NIHR Research for Patient Benefit, NIHR Invention for Innovation, Arthritis Research UK for a total of more than £3M. PEER REVIEW Professor Fedele is peer reviewer of more than 20 general medical and specialist Journals. He is Associated Editor of the Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine and Oral Diseases. He regularly reviews grant applications for NIHR, Cancer Research UK and other national and international funding bodies.
